Paintball is a very popular sport/game that is enjoyed by millions of people worldwide. It is essentially a game that mimics the world of modern military combat, but without the use of deadly weapons. Instead, paintball guns (sometimes referred too as "markers") shoot round balls of a mixture of food coloring and gelatin that splatter upon impact with an opponent, "marking" that person as having been shot or killed.
The first paintball equipment was introduced during the late 1970's and early 1980's. The original markers were actually designed for the forestry service as a means of marking trees for harvesting and for tracking livestock. However, it was soon discovered that this equipment could be used to create an adrenaline pumping live-action game, and an international phenomenon was born. Today, it is a game that is played both for fun and competitively, and there are several organizations dedicated to this sport.
It is important to note that the rules of paintball can vary from location to location, and indeed, even game to game. In most instances, there is a stated goal and that goal must be met without being shot, or "marked", by a paintball. That being said, the goal can vary, as can the rules by which one can achieve the goal. The rules can also vary according to the field of play, whether that is in a forest or a dedicated paintballing park.
